223 (Research):1975 Letter from Blanche Barbour Starney to David R. Taylor.
She had a family bible from David Bell and Mary Read.
George Read, born 16 Dec. 1693, St. Philip's Parish, Island of Barbadoes, he was married August 1714 to Anne Scott by the Rev. John H. Courtman on Barbadoes. First mention of George in Carteret records, of which I am aware, is the item in St. Johns Paish Book dated 30 April 1742. In Carteret Deed Books D, E, & F he signed deeds as Clerk of Court 1743 through 1754. In Colonial Records Vol. 4, page 635, record is made of a land grant to George Read 25 July 1743. George wrote his will May 26, 1753, probated Sept. 1755, so he probably died August 1755. He mentions in his will: wife Anne, Son Robert, dau. Anne who was wife of John Morgan, daughter Martha who was wife of Israel Christian, dau. Frances who was under 16 & dau. Sarah under 14. (One John Morgan died 1766 in Carteret Co. This could be Anne's husband. If she was 2 yrs. younger than Robert and was born in 1732, she would have been 34 in 1766 when John died, if he were her husband. His will mentions only children: Mark, William, Mary, and Dorothy, no wife.) Colonial & State Records of N.C. Vol. 22, page 263, June 14, 1747 mentions that George Read was Clerk of the Regiment of Colonial Militia under Col. Thomas Lovick. Carteret Deed Book D, page 349, shows that on Feb. 25, 1743 George Read bought from Joshua Nash 112 acres on Shepards Creek, south side of Newport River, for 95 pounds "in bills of ye province". 25 July 1743 George Read at a Council Meeting at Edenton petitioned for a land grant of 300 acres in Carteret County, N.C. Colonial Records, Vol 4, page 635. He also bought 30 July 1751 from George Cogdell 45 acres near Shepards Creek: Book E, page 271-73, which probably joined the property he bought from Joshua Nash on Sheppards Creek.

One family story says that he left home when he was 11 years old and went to Alabama. Another states that after his father's death he moved with his mother to Claibourne County, Tennessee, and then moved to Madison County, Alabama in 1808. Either way, by 1809 Henry was living in Madison County, Mississippi Territory (present-day Alabama) near Huntsville. Henry's name does not appear on the 1809 Mississippi Territory census, so he may have been living with relatives or with his wife's family. During the War of 1812, Henry served in Capt. Crawford's Company of Colonel Burris' Regiment of Mounted Militia. In 1829, Henry moved his family to Calloway County, Kentucky. Henry appears in County Court records as a witness on his father-in-law's pension record in 1832. Henry and Martha moved there family to Clair County, Illinois in 1837 or 1838. By 1840 they had moved to Jackson County, Illinois, settling east of present-day Campbell Hill. In March of 1852, Henry applied for Bounty Land and received 40 acres; three years later, in April 1855, he applied for and received an additonal 120 acres. On April 28, 1871 Henry filed for a Military Pension for his service during the War of 1812, however, his claim was rejected because he had not served the required 90 days. After the death of his wife in 1861 Henry moved in with his son John A. Loy.

249 (Research):A conference was held in April (1837), when it was voted to ordain three elders viz. A. B. Wilson to take charge of that part of the conference that rein Tennesse [Tennessee], James Beaty for the same in Kentucky, and Alfred Loy, who soon after in company with others faom [from] that place at whose requst [request] I led from thence to Far West Mo.; for that is the name of the place where the church has located in Caldwell Co. at a distance of about thirty miles in nearly a northerly direction from Liberty Clay Co. My stay in that region was not over three weeks, as it became duty for me to leave there for this place: I journied [journeyed] by water from Liberty via. St. Louis and other intermediate places to Wellsville, occupying sixteen days from Liberty to Kirtland, being absent near eight months and travelled [traveled] in all by land and water over five thousand miles, preaching the word to thousands-many of whom had a desire to learn about the strange truth contained in the gospel of the Son of God. May their honest requests be satisfied in a good degree, while I may for a time be permitted to enjoy the society of an affectionate family and many worthy friends in this place. I am in the bonds of the gospel, yours &c. H. G. Sherwood from a letter dated 1 Aug 1837

On the 29th of April I preached at Brother Crides and baptized and confirmed them. I put a crop in the spring of the year 1838 and then on the 11th day of June I started in company with Clapp and Alfred Lay and Radolph Alexander and Petty to preach again on my second mission. I took passage on the steamer Kansas at Jack Ferry in Ray County. I went to St. Louis then down the river and up the Ohio to Prode Ferry and then commenced our labors. I left Petty and Alexander at the mouth of the Tennessee River. We landed on the Kentucky side and went up into Warren County and Clapp and Lay left me. Excerpt from a letter written by Mrs. Minnie May Snyder (1875-1971) of Belleville, Illinois. She was the step daughter of Henry G. Loy. Her mother was Mary E. Bradley and her father was John W. Brashear who died when she was abt 2 years old. Her mother married Henry G. Loy when Minnie was about 5 years old so he was the only father she ever knew.

«i»"Dr. Alfred Loy was the oldest in the family and when they all went to California at the time of the Gold rush - Pa, the doctor, and several of their sisters were in the wagon train that crossed the plains in the covered wagons. It took them six months to make the trip out to California; one of Pa's sisters died and they had to leave her there and then when they got to Salt Lake City, Utah, they go mixed up with the Mormons and those who escaped had to go by night, and Dr. Loy was there when Pa would tell us about his trip across (but what ever became of him we do not know)"«/i»
